Conserving forests reduces your annual carbon footprint

The Chilean National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) carried out a study using standards from the Intergovernmental Panel of Experts on Climate Change (IPCC), which determined how much CO2 the evergreen forest is capable of absorbing, which, in turn, revealed its capacity is capturing 17.10 tons of CO2 per hectare in one year (tCO2/ha/year)!
Since the capture of CO2 is related directly to the growth rate of trees, the ecosystemic function of Patagonian Coihue of Magallanes, Lenga and Canelo, native species, has been more efficient at capturing carbon than trees of other forests.
The average Chilean person produces 4.7 tons of CO2 per year according to the Carbon Footprint calculator. Measuring our carbon footprint shows the amount of CO2 being released into the atmosphere through our daily activities and provides an indicator/metric of impact on climate change.
Because 1 hectare of native evergreen forest absorbs an average of 17.1 tons of CO2, then preserving 5 hectares of native forest absorbs 85 tons of CO2, offsetting the carbon footprint of 18 Chileans on average.
